The danger and difficulty of attempting this drive after a recent rain cannot be overstated. Under ideal conditions, a regular 2wd vehicle will get you to the first overlook and a high clearance vehicle will get you to the best overlooks. However, if it has recently rained, then even an offroad 4×4 may not be sufficient to get to you past the clay and over the washes.

That’s a very extreme example of a flash flood. But the road washing out is significantly more common, especially during the rainy season.
